Are you conscious about what goes into the making of the cosmetics that end up in your vanity?

Every year thousands of animals are tortured & abused to test Beauty & Personal Care Products even before it hits the counters and lands in your Vanity Box. Though there's a wave called Organic or Natural, Vegan & Cruelty Free, as more and more people are moving towards conscious living which has also forced beauty brands to change the thought process and come up with Vegan & Cruelty Free Products. Let's see what does Natural/Organic, Vegan & Cruelty Free mean.

Vegan doesn't mean Cruelty Free - Vegan implies that the product does not include any animal-derived ingredients, while Cruelty Free means that the product was developed without any tests on animals. Natural/Organic on the other hand is a gray area - product may be natural if it is free of chemical toxins - parabens, SLS, synthetic fragrances and artificial colour.

Now brands can be both Vegan & Cruelty Free however if a brand just says Vegan, there is a grey area, if it is also Cruelty Free and vice versa. If a Beauty and Personal Brand is sold in mainland China, then I doubt it would be Cruelty Free, considering animal testing is mandatory for foreign cosmetics sold in China. Brands like Chanel, Clinique, Revlon, L’Oreal, Maybelline do test on animals.

So how do you find out if the Beauty and Personal Brand is Vegan & Cruelty Free?

Do some research, as there is no legal standard for the companies to use the labels, hence it is important to be mindful while picking products and reading the ingredients carefully with or without such labels. I might not have the absolute answers to clarify the Natural Beauty Products and since the subject is debatable and I would not like to venture into the same however one thing am sure about is if the product has a longer shelf life it has to have some preservatives and that cannot be said as organic (next time you go for organic beauty products, you would like to consider this factor).

100% Vegan + Cruelty Free, does not necessarily mean Organic or Natural, chances are they are made up of synthetic ingredients. Some Indian Brands which claim 100% Vegan + Cruelty Free and Natural/Organic are - Disguise claims 100% Vegan and Cruelty Free being PETA Certified.

Forest Essentials, Certified, by the Ministry of Ayush, Govt. of India, claims to be 100% natural and inspired by Ayurveda recipes free from chemicals and preservatives besides being Cruelty Free (In my upcoming Product Review Post I would be sharing some Forest Essentials Product Reviews).

Next on my list is, SoulTree claims they use authentic Ayurvedic recipes and honestly-sourced natural, organic ingredients. What I like about SoulTree is they have explained on their website the word Natural being used loosely by every beauty brand. They are Certified by BDIH, Germany and claim to be 100% Vegan and Cruelty Free besides being free of parabens, silicones, lead/SLS. You can purchase their products online @Amazon.

Other than the ones mentioned above there are few other brands which are Cruelty Free -

Sugar Cosmetics FAQ Sections says 100% Cruelty Free however no claims on being Vegan found. Essence, clearly mentions on their website that they are against Animal Testing, however not all products are Vegan some products do contain Beeswax and other animal derivatives. Love the fact that Essence openly shares it with their Customers!!

Lotus Herbals, it does claim to be Cruelty Free and Free From Chemicals and Synthetic, however I could not find anything on their website that says if it 100% Vegan. Plum Cosmetics, claims we are a PETA Certified 100% Vegan & Cruelty-Free Brand. Our products are TOTALLY free of Parabens, Phthalates, Propylene Glycol, SLS, DEA & PABA.

Makeup Revolution, PETA-Certified Cruelty Free, 76% Vegan

Burt's Bee clearly mention on their website that they are Cruelty Free, check here. You’ll see the Leaping Bunny Seal on the packaging and though most of the Ingredients are Vegan and for those that are not they mention the same.

Kama Ayurveda, their products are created using authentic Ayurvedic recipes, and are 100% natural and vegetarian

Khadi, Cruelty-Free, Vegan and 100% Parabens Free

Shahnaaz Husain, pioneered the Herbal Beauty Care Movement

Chambor, "FREE FROM ANIMAL INGREDIENTS" & as a company we are strongly against any cruelty towards animals.

NYX, claims that they do not test on animals, however being a subsidiary of L'Oréal, a company that tests on animals, I am excluding this from the list. I have taken utmost care in researching and adding these brands to the list, however if you find there is any deviation, please let me know and please do your research to start with conscious living. You may be interested to check the complete list on 100% Vegan & Cruelty Free Brands available in Indian Market, check here.

You would love to read Cruelty Free Kitty as she has compiled a huge list of Cruelty Free Brands globally. Additionally, here's PETA's Beauty Without Bunnies Database, where you can search the Companies that are Vegan, Cruelty Free and the one's that still test on animals. PETA has compiled a huge database for Cruelty Free Companies in India (The Database was last updated on April, 2018). However, before you go ahead and start purchasing these cruelty free and vegan brands, my one cent is look for Leaping Bunny Logo and though not all brands go for Leaping Bunny Logo or PETA Certification as the applying for the certification is a voluntary & largely I guess personal choice of the brand, hence it is good to study and research on brands that are Vegan & Cruelty Free.

Have you tried Vegan and Cruelty Free Beauty and Personal Care Products? How do you identify that the Brand is 100% Vegan + Cruelty Free. We would love to hear your views.
